CHARACTER NAME: Cordelia Chase
FANDOM: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series
CANON: After her death in 512: You’re Welcome.
WHAT THEY LOST: Memories of Connor, Angel’s son.
PERSONALITY: Cordelia is outspoken, opinionated, and materialistic on first glance. She is brutally honest, often to the point where she doesn’t consider tact even an option, and just says whatever comes to mind as needed to prove her point. She’s aware of her assets, her strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to use them to get what she wants or needs to do, done. She also is very self-sufficient, doing her best to take care of herself as needed. As the years progressed both working with the Scoobies and later with Angel and the gang, Cordelia evolved into a strong, intelligent woman with a good head on her shoulders, who didn’t lose sight of the mission at hand.
Or the fact that they needed to get paid while they did it.
When she first received the visions from Doyle in the middle of Season 1, she really didn’t want them. She knew responsibility when she saw it, and she didn’t want to be the one to have to take it. However, at the end of the season, when she was trapped mystically in her visions, and exposed to the whole world’s suffering, all the people that needed Angel’s help, she finally started to see her place in grand scheme of things. When given the choice to give up the visions for the life she always wanted, she somehow managed to find her way back to Angel and the calling that she had found in the first place. She knows where she works best, and that’s at the heart of Angel Investigations.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Her life used to be simpler.
Shopping. She used to go shopping. She used to shop till she dropped and not worry about demons or vampires or miracle vampire babies or evil law firms or higher beings possessing her body in order to give birth to themselves. Her life was easy and carefree and unclouded by visions of people who needed saving. But now it wasn’t. Now it had Angel and Doyle and trips to alternate dimensions and Lorne and Groo, and her spending weekends covered up to her elbows and all kinds of demon yuck. It wasn’t glamorous. It wasn’t the kind of life she had envisioned for herself when she was growing up back in Sunnydale. It was the kind of thing that lead to her being twenty-three years-old, dying, and trying to bargain her way into one last case with the Powers that Be.
Cordelia could drive a hard bargain, but she also knew that the Powers were stubborn sons of bitches. They didn’t like being told what to do, regardless of how much she had been through because of them. She had nearly died more times than she could count because of the path that Jasmine had set her on, but she had done it all with a smile on her face and the mission in mind, because as far as she was concerned, she wasn’t doing it for her. She was doing it for Angel and all those people out there that Angel was supposed to save. And when the Powers gave her what she wanted, regardless of the fact that she knew that this would be her last hurrah, for all the marbles—she knew it was the right thing to do.
Because despite the vamps, the goddesses, and the demon yuck, Cordelia could honestly say that she had been happy.
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Okay, Powers, enough is enough. I’m sick of just being shuffled around like some cosmic trick pony. I am not someone you can just move around at whatever whim you decide. Human, seer, half-demon, higher being—I’m so over it. I’m done. And you owe me, remember? I so deserve better than some tackily done medieval wannabe holding cell. Let’s think about this seriously now. A castle?
[a beat]
Wait, a castle?
[another beat]
Oh, my God. Am I a princess again?
